Spatial Sound

Solid Lure is an experimental AV performance where the main focus is on combining different art forms as dance, visuals sound and fashion and integrate them into the 4DSOUND system by creating a media mass around the theme: spatiality in art.

After half year of working with 4DSOUND, Fanni Fazakas (RUMEX) got to know the essentials of working with spatial sound. With her project Solid Lure, she intends to highlight the possibilities of 4DSOUND by creating a audiovisual performance where the spatiality and the movement of the sound sources are controlled by a dancer.

'Through working with 4DSOUND I started to experience how much we forget about listening carefully in our daily life - many say that is because our society is visually oriented. I’m an audiovisual artist thinking that in Solid Lure, the visuals are made in such a way that it helps to understand what happens when the dancer is controlling the sound, but also how sound is gaining new audible layers while it manifests in time and space.'

The concept is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration. Contemporary dancer Renata Vörös has been researching a choreography technique where the space within the dancers are moving is extremely limited. The limited moving space is being symbolised by a white square projected on the floor, surrounded by four transparent walls that the dancer interacts with. Anytime she is moving in a certain direction, the sound source and the visual as well are reacting to it and moving into this particular space in time.

The performance was accomplished by using a kinect sensor system and RiOT gyro sensitive sensors with the help of software engineer Gábor Fekete, translating data out from the skeleton points through OSC to the 4DSOUND which calculates the position of each sound according to the body parts. To help the flexibility of Renata’s movement a special costume is made to fix the wireless Riot sensors at the two wrists and ankles. Fashion designer and owner of Csetresz, Johanna Kupi signed for a stretchable body colour piece which also serves the concept of minimalism.
