Jamie Man

Jamie Man 文珮玲 (London, 1987) creates works for live performance, primarily concerned with music and the poetic mystery of what we are.

Body Language (LOD Muziektheater, 2014) and PLAY: Episodes in Subspace (Gulbenkian Music Foundation LIsbon, 2016)  were the first of her works to vividly explore the nature of masochism and the violence of the voyeuristic gaze. These experiments in carving a music to traverse both material and immaterial planes laid foundations for much of her work which followed including 四 / Shi (Tokyo, 2017), Geburt (Berlin, 2019) and an ongoing series of works entitled Outrenoir. Inspired by the dark canvases of french artist Pierre Soulages, each work is an installation-performance exploring the different ways that darkness allows us to see. Outrenoir I: A reflection was created for Ensemble Xenon (Berlin, 2018), Outrenoir II: Appetitus for the London Symphony Orchestra Soundhub (2019) and Outrenoir III: The Little Death for the San Francisco Symphony Soundbox Series (2022). Connaissez-vous le cri du Chocard? for Orchestra, light and darkness was commissioned by l’Orchestre de Chambre de Paris and Théatre du Châtelet (Paris) in 2020 supported by the Franco-British fund Diaphonique. In 2021 Jamie created ZELLE with writerPeter Stamm; her first opera as composer and director on the fragmented landscape of the human mind and the contradicting voices of the divided self.

Jamie was a Sound and Music embedded composer with The Mahogany Opera Group (London, 2013-15), ENOA Artist-in-Residence at LOD Muziektheater (Ghent, 2018), Soundhub Composer with the London Symphony Orchestra (London, 2018-9) and is a member of Sonotomia
